Melasma
Melasma is a chronic pigment condition, often triggered by hormones, sun and heat. It can be managed well, but it rarely responds to a single quick fix.
About melasma
Melasma usually appears as symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip or chin. It is more common in women and in medium to darker skin types, and it can start or worsen with pregnancy or hormonal medication.
Because heat and inflammation can make melasma worse, aggressive treatment can backfire. Good results come from a patient plan: sun and visible light protection, prescription topicals, and carefully chosen in-clinic treatments.
- Symmetrical patches on the cheeks, forehead or upper lip
- Pigment that darkens in summer or after heat exposure
- Patches that appeared during pregnancy or with hormonal contraception
- Pigment that returned after previous treatment
A physician confirms the diagnosis, since melasma can be mistaken for sun damage or post-inflammatory pigment. Melasma care at Fountain has two sides. On the aesthetic side, Dr. Guo offers Cosmelan®, Dermamelan® and carefully selected laser treatments. On the medical side, Dr. Damji provides medical melasma treatments, including sun and visible light protection and prescription topicals. Many plans combine both. For a longer-term plan, see melasma treatments.
Consultation, treatment and follow-up
Assessment
A physician examines the skin, asks about history and triggers, and confirms what the concern actually is before any treatment is suggested.
A plan and a cost
Options are explained with realistic expectations and limits. Where treatment is cosmetic, the full cost is quoted before anything is booked.
Follow-up
Progress is reviewed at an interval suited to the condition, and the plan is adjusted if the skin does not respond as expected.
Where treatment is cosmetic, cost depends on the treatment, the area and the number of sessions, so it is quoted at consultation once a plan exists. Results vary between individuals.

Can melasma be cured?
Melasma is usually managed rather than cured. Many people see significant improvement, and ongoing protection helps keep it under control.
Does laser make melasma worse?
Some heat-based treatments can worsen melasma. Any device-based treatment is chosen cautiously and only when it suits your skin.
