What separates medical aesthetics from a med spa
Physician-led medical aesthetics is cosmetic treatment delivered inside a medical practice, planned by a physician who can diagnose the skin first and manage a complication on site. Here is what that means in practice, and what to ask any clinic in Calgary.
The word "medical" is doing real work
"Medical aesthetics" is not a protected term in Alberta. A salon, a med spa and a dermatology clinic may all use it.
That is why it is worth asking any clinic who assesses you, what they are trained in, and what happens if something goes wrong. At Fountain, the answers are a physician, inside a dermatology practice, on site.
Dermatology-led care starts from diagnosis. Many skin concerns look alike and respond to very different treatments. A clinician trained to tell melasma from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or a benign lesion from one that needs a closer look, chooses treatment differently.
Five questions for any clinic
Use these wherever you book. They are the differences that matter most in practice.
| Question | Why it matters | At Fountain |
|---|---|---|
| Who assesses me before treatment? | Look-alike concerns can need opposite treatments. | A physician examines your skin before any device or syringe is chosen. |
| Who performs the treatment, and how are they trained? | Technique and anatomy knowledge shape both safety and result. | Treatments are performed by or under the supervision of a physician. |
| Is the product prescription-grade? | Neuromodulators, fillers and medical peels are medical products. | Product is prescribed and administered, not retailed over a counter. |
| Is the device right for my skin type? | Some lasers carry pigmentation risk in darker Fitzpatrick types. | Platforms and settings are selected for your Fitzpatrick type. |
| What happens if something goes wrong? | Complications are rare, but speed matters when they occur. | Complications are managed on site, immediately, by trained clinicians. |
Aesthetics and medicine, in one buildingWhat physician planning looks like
Found in a cosmetic consult
If an aesthetic appointment turns up something medical, it can be assessed in the same clinic without a new referral or starting over.
Restraint by design
Physician planning favours conservative starting points and refinement at review over an obvious result.
An honest no
If a treatment will not move the thing that bothers you, we will say so rather than sell it.

Frequently asked questions
What is a medical aesthetics clinic?
A medical aesthetics clinic delivers cosmetic treatment inside a medical practice, by or under the supervision of a physician, using prescription-grade products and medical-grade devices. Fountain is the medical aesthetics practice of Rejuvenation Dermatology in Calgary, so assessment is performed by a physician, products are prescribed rather than retailed, and complications are managed on site.
What is the difference between a med spa and a medical aesthetics clinic in Calgary?
'Medical aesthetics' is not a legally protected term in Alberta, so a salon, a med spa and a dermatology clinic may all use it. The differences that matter in practice are who assesses you before treatment, how much training the person holding the needle has, whether prescription-grade product is available, and whether the clinic can manage a complication such as a vascular occlusion without sending you elsewhere.
Is medical aesthetic treatment safe for darker skin tones?
It can be, provided the platform and settings are chosen for your Fitzpatrick type. Several widely used resurfacing lasers carry a genuine risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in skin of colour. Fountain selects devices, such as fractional radiofrequency, so treatment can be offered across the full Fitzpatrick range.
Do I need a referral for a cosmetic consultation?
No. Cosmetic and medical aesthetic consultations are booked directly and do not require a physician referral. Cosmetic treatments are not covered by Alberta Health Care Insurance.
How much do treatments cost?
Cost depends on the treatment, the area and the number of units or sessions involved, so it is quoted at consultation once a plan exists. You will always be given the full cost of a plan before anything is booked.
